Love and Freedom - Masaniello (2006), directed by Angelo Antonucci. In Naples in 1647, under the Spanish viceroyalty, the people are oppressed by heavy taxes and the misrule of the Duke of Arcos (Franco Nero). Masaniello (Sergio Assisi), a young fishmonger, becomes the leader of a popular uprising that breaks out on July 7 over a tax on fruit. Supported by his wife Bernardina (Anna Ammirati) and the people, he proclaims the Republic of the Most Faithful Neapolitan People and temporarily secures the abolition of the taxes. The viceroy and the Vicereine (Anna Galiena) plot against him: Masaniello is poisoned, descends into madness, and is assassinated on July 16, after only ten days of revolt.
