'Soul’ by London’s psychedelic rock’n’soul superheroes Near Death Experience (NDX for short) is a thrilling, fun, infectious, rollercoaster ride, brimming with sassy 60s and 70s cool. ’Soul’ opens with award-winning New York drummer Josh Van Ness’s funky beats and Ian Whiteling’s distinctive soulful, gritty vocal delivery, with the singer refusing to give up his soul as it’s the “only goddamn thing” that he wants to keep. Driving acoustic guitars then enter the fray powering the song forward, while London’s King of Cool Jack Dawkins provides irresistible jazzy saxophone. Underpinning everything as usual is Amar Grover’s wonderfully melodic retro bass-guitar playing. The clever juxtaposition of contrasting hook-laden verse sections and the anthemic chorus give ‘Soul’ an enticing, energetic pop vibe drawing the listener into yet another incredibly catchy song from the pen of NDX’s Whiteling, who also recorded and produced the track.
